Best Buys for May
May is one of the best months of the year to score serious deals. With warmer weather arriving and major holidays like Mother’s Day and Memorial Day, retailers roll out big discounts across multiple categories. In fact, Memorial Day weekend has become one of the biggest shopping events of the year, with sales often starting weeks in advance, especially on big-ticket items like furniture, appliances, and outdoor gear. If you’re planning purchases strategically, May is the perfect time to save.

Cinco de Mayo
Most grocery stores will have awesome deals on Cinco de Mayo-inspired groceries. Look for sales on avocados, cheese, ground beef, salsa, tortillas, tortilla chips, and refried beans. This is one sale I look forward to all year, lots of my favorites at stock-up prices.
Don’t overlook seasonal produce and grocery savings either. Fruits and vegetables like strawberries, asparagus, and zucchini are in peak season, making them more affordable and better quality at the same time. Planning meals around what’s in season is an easy way to stretch your grocery budget further.
Clothing
Spring clothing and athletic wear are another smart buy. As retailers transition into summer styles, you’ll find markdowns on spring apparel and activewear. It’s a great opportunity to grab lightweight layers, workout gear, and everyday basics at a fraction of their original price.
Gardening and Outdoor
Outdoor and backyard essentials really shine this month. Grills, patio furniture, lawn equipment, and gardening tools all see solid discounts ahead of peak summer demand. Shopping early in May can help you beat both the crowds and the higher prices that often hit once summer is in full swing. This is also a great time to stock up on mulch, soil, and plants during popular seasonal garden sales. Look for deals on flowers, hoses, mulch, plants, plant food, seeds, soil, watering cans, and weed killers.
Mother’s Day
May is a surprisingly good time to shop for kitchenware and cookware. With Mother’s Day, wedding, and graduation season in full swing, many retailers run promotions on pots, pans, and small kitchen gadgets. If you’ve been wanting to upgrade your kitchen without overspending, this is a great month to do it.

Memorial Day
One of the biggest areas to shop in May is mattresses and bedding. Memorial Day sales bring some of the year’s lowest prices, often with deep discounts and bonus perks like free pillows or sheets. If you’ve been thinking about upgrading your sleep setup, this is one of the smartest times to buy before prices climb again later in the year.
Furniture and home goods are also standout deals this month. Retailers discount couches, dining sets, and décor heavily in the weeks leading up to Memorial Day as they make room for summer inventory. Whether you’re refreshing a room or furnishing a new space, May offers a great mix of selection and savings without the clearance-level leftovers you’ll see later in the season.
Large and small appliances are another category worth watching. From refrigerators and washers to coffee makers and blenders, stores typically offer strong promotions in May as new models roll in and older inventory gets marked down. If you’ve been holding off on replacing an appliance, this is one of the better windows to buy without waiting until fall.
Paper Products
There are usually great deals on paper products during the month of May. You should see specials on paper plates, picnic, and party supplies towards the end of May.
Thrift Stores
May is always a great month for Thrift Store shopping. Spring cleaning has been happening in many homes for the past month. Your local thrift stores should be well-stocked with new inventory from spring cleaners. Check out your local Salvation Army, Goodwill, or independent thrift store to find some excellent deals this month.
Overall, May is all about shopping ahead of summer while taking advantage of major holiday promotions. Whether you’re upgrading your home, refreshing your wardrobe, or preparing your outdoor space, this month offers a wide range of opportunities to save. Plan your purchases around Memorial Day sales, and you’ll get some of the best deals of the season.
